Mathematical Models in Medicine

Cardiovascular diseases are one of the principle causes of death in the developed countries. Research in this field is becoming increasingly important and many advances are already due to the role played by mathematics. Alfio Quarteroni will speak on how mathematics can contribute to cardiovascular research at the coming ICM2006 International Congress of Mathematicians shortly to be held in Madrid.

(1) Study in this field is not concerned with the search for the formula to eternal life or the cure for all ills. Nevertheless, the appropriate mathematical model could contribute to providing the quantitative and qualitative information necessary for making the right medical decisions. This Italian mathematician will give some examples of the work currently being carried out in this field, such as the simulation of blood flow through a by-pass, which could help to understand how the geometric shape of this device influences re-circulation of the blood and a patient’s recovery process after a surgical operation. Furthermore, individualized treatment could be devised for patients with vascular implants such as a shunt, a valve linking the ascending aorta and the right pulmonary artery. These devices are implanted in newborn children with ventricular defects of the heart. Other examples are modelling using scalar equations of the level of concentration of substances carried in the blood, such as oxygen or cholesterol, and modelling by equations expressing the continuity of normal blood flow in interfaces.  

(2) Says Quarteroni: “Mathematical models based on partial differential equations are essential today for reproducing the characteristics of blood flow under certain physiological and pathological conditions”.

Alfio Quarteroni was born in Ripalta Cremasca, Cremona (Italy) in 1952. He graduated from the University of Pavía in 1975 and became a professor in 1986 at the University of Brescia. For several years he has alternated his working life between different educational institutions; lecturing at the Milan Polytechnic and professor at the École Polytechnique Fédérale in Lausanne. Throughout his career he has received various prizes. This year he was awarded the Città di Lodi Fanfullino della Riconoscenza and the Capo D';Orlando Prize. Furthermore, he is a member of the Italian Academy of Sciences. Among his recent professional achievements he has been head of the team that carried out the mathematical simulation for the “Alinghi”, the craft that won the latest America’s Cup.
